Sins are not all equal. Some are considered major sins (al-Kabāʾir) because they cause great harm to faith, society, and the individual soul. The Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah repeatedly warn believers against these serious acts.
The Prophet Muhammad said:
“Avoid the seven destructive sins.” The companions asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what are they?” He said:
Associating partners with Allah, sorcery, killing a soul which Allah has forbidden except by right, consuming usury, consuming the wealth of an orphan, fleeing from the battlefield, and slandering chaste believing women.
— (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
Islamic scholars such as Imam Al‑Dhahabi expanded on these teachings and identified many major sins based on the Qur’an and authentic hadith. The following ten represent some of the most serious sins emphasized in Islamic sources.
1. Shirk – Associating Partners with Allah
Shirk is the greatest sin in Islam. It means worshipping or attributing divine qualities to anyone besides Allah.
The Qur’an states:
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.”
— Qur’an 4:48
Another verse warns:
“Whoever associates partners with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and his refuge is the Fire.”
— Qur’an 5:72
Shirk contradicts the central Islamic belief in Tawhid (the oneness of God).
2. Murder – Taking an Innocent Life
Islam strongly condemns unjust killing.
The Qur’an says:
“Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land—it is as if he had slain all mankind.”
— Qur’an 5:32
The Prophet Muhammad also warned:
“A believer remains within the scope of his religion so long as he does not kill unlawfully.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari
Human life is considered sacred, and its unjust destruction is among the gravest crimes.
3. Practicing Magic or Sorcery (Sihr)
Sorcery involves invoking supernatural forces in ways forbidden in Islam.
The Qur’an mentions the danger of magic:
“But the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic…”
— Qur’an 2:102
The Prophet Muhammad listed sorcery among the destructive sins that lead people away from faith.
4. Consuming Usury (Riba)
Riba, or exploitative interest, is severely condemned in Islam because it creates injustice and economic oppression.
The Qur’an declares:
“Those who consume usury will not stand except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity.”
— Qur’an 2:275
It also warns:
“If you do not give up what remains of riba, then be informed of a war from Allah and His Messenger.”
— Qur’an 2:279
This strong language highlights the seriousness of economic exploitation.
5. Consuming the Wealth of Orphans
Islam places strong emphasis on protecting vulnerable members of society, especially orphans.
The Qur’an states:
“Indeed, those who consume the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming fire into their bellies.”
— Qur’an 4:10
This warning shows the gravity of exploiting those who cannot defend themselves.
6. Fleeing from the Battlefield
In situations where Muslims must defend themselves, abandoning the battlefield unjustly is considered a major sin.
The Qur’an says:
“Whoever turns his back to them on such a day—unless maneuvering for battle or joining another group—has certainly incurred wrath from Allah.”
— Qur’an 8:16
This refers specifically to legitimate defensive battles and emphasizes courage and responsibility.
7. False Accusation Against Chaste Women (Slander)
Slandering a chaste person—especially accusing them falsely of adultery—is a serious crime.
The Qur’an warns:
“Indeed, those who accuse chaste, unaware, believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter.”
— Qur’an 24:23
Islam requires clear evidence and strict standards before making such accusations.
8. Disrespecting or Disobeying Parents
Islam teaches deep respect for parents.
The Qur’an commands:
“Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and that you be kind to parents.”
— Qur’an 17:23
The Prophet Muhammad said:
“Shall I not inform you of the greatest of major sins? … Associating partners with Allah and disobedience to parents.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari
Honoring parents is therefore considered an essential moral duty.
9. Bearing False Witness and Lying
Truthfulness is a fundamental Islamic value.
The Prophet Muhammad once repeatedly warned about false testimony:
“Beware of false speech and false witness.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari
He repeated the warning so often that the companions wished he would stop due to the seriousness of the matter.
10. Adultery and Fornication (Zina)
Islam strongly emphasizes protecting family structure and moral conduct.
The Qur’an commands:
“Do not approach adultery. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and an evil way.”
— Qur’an 17:32
This instruction not only forbids the act itself but also discourages behaviors that may lead toward it.
Repentance and Allah’s Mercy
Although these sins are grave, Islam also teaches that Allah’s mercy is vast.
The Qur’an says:
“Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.”
— Qur’an 39:53
Sincere repentance (tawbah) involves:
- Recognizing the sin
- Feeling genuine remorse
- Stopping the sin immediately
- Resolving never to return to it
