This story is about a group of youths who hid inside a cave around the year 250 AD to escape Roman persecutions and emerged centuries later in a different reign.

The story tells of a group of young believers living among people who worshipped other gods. The companions of the cave because of their faith, faced the threat of persecution and punishment, eventually seeking refuge in a cave.

 Surah al-Kahf, the eighteenth chapter of the Quran, contains the remarkable story of the People of the Cave (Ashab al-Kahf). It details their devotion to Allah, their courage in the face of persecution, and Allah’s protection of them.

A Society of Persecution

The society in which the young men lived, worshipped false gods alongside or instead of the one true God. Rather than accepting the beliefs of their society, they declared their faith openly:

    “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity.”

— Qur’an 18:14

Their declaration represented a serious challenge to the religious order around them. They were not merely expressing a private belief; they were rejecting the religious practices of their society and affirming that worship belongs to Allah alone.

The young believers feared the consequences if someone had learned of belief and understood that their society could pressure them to abandon their faith.

 “Indeed, if they come to know of you, they will stone you or force you to return to their religion, and then you will never succeed.”

— Qur’an 18:20

The first was physical punishment: the young believers feared that they could be stoned because of their faith.

The second was religious coercion: they could be forced to abandon their belief and return to the religion of their people.

Choosing Faith Over Safety

Faced with this danger, the young believers decided to leave their society and seek refuge in a cave. They prayed:

    “Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.”

— Qur’an 18:10

Their decision demonstrates the importance they placed on preserving their faith. They did not seek confrontation or violence. Instead, they removed themselves from the immediate danger and placed their trust in God.

Whilst hiding in the cave Allah caused them to sleep, without death, and preserved there bodies. They remained asleep in the cave for three centuries.

When they woke up three hundred and nine years later, they didn’t know how long they were asleep for and decided to send one of them to get food with some coins they had saved. The companion who went to fetch the food from the town for the rest of the group, noticed that the currency had changed and that the Emperor and people they were fleeing persecution from had all died many many years ago and that the entire region had converted to monotheism.

“And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine.”

When they eventually awoke, they believed that they had slept for only part of a day. They sent one of their companions into the city to obtain food, instructing him to be careful and not reveal their identity.

Were They Early Christians?

Although the exact historic period is not detailed in the Quran, there is a very similar account mentioned in the story of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus, a group traditionally associated with early Christianity and persecution under the Roman Empire.

After the departure of Jesus the Romans vehemently opposed the Prophecy and the teachings of Jesus (AS) during the early Christian era. Those who believed and confessed were sought out, punished, tortured and killed in public.

There are similarities between the traditions, particularly the themes of young believers fleeing persecution, hiding in a cave, sleeping for a miraculous period, and awakening many years later.

Divine Protection

Whether or not they are identified historically with early Christians, both religious accounts provide a central message: faith may be tested by society, but believers should place their trust in Allah, seek safety from persecution, and remain conscious that worldly power does not have the final word.

When the townspeople found out

The person who went to fetch the food, now realising the change in status quo told the newly converted townspeople about his companions. Upon seeing them and hearing their escape and hiding, the people were astonished. How could a small group of young men clearly from a previous era possessing historical coins, survive that long in a cave without dying and decomposing?

And thus the miracle became clear for both the young men, who thought they slept for a night or part of day, still in fear of persecution and the townspeople who were now facing the reality of talking with 300 year old young men who should have passed away many many centuries ago, now alive in the present.

The companions of the cave died shortly afterwards and the now the monotheistic government astonished and encouraged by the miracle, honored them with a monument, preserving their miraculous story throughout the ages which was further confirmed and re-honored through the last Prophet.
