Road map to Learning the Deen

The Quran is a wonderful script preserved through the ages to provide guidance and wisdom to the inhabitants of Earth.

Reading, understand, memorising and being able to recite from it is cherished and encouraged. Moreover it helps to clarify common misconceptions about the nature of religion.

Revealed in stages throughout the Prophets (PBUH) lifetime it is useful to understand some background of the time of revelation for Arabic and non-Arab speakers.

History

During the time of revelation, around 5th Century AD the Arabs in Arabia were deeply entrenched in Shirk, (the belief of having many Gods) predominantly made from statues that they would worship, prostrate to and make covenants to. Idol worship was the backbone of the commerce for the tribes of Mekkah with pilgrims coming from across the region to pay homage to various Gods and receive blessing, luck and other thing

The Prophet PBUH like others throughout history was tasked with the message of ending these practices and faced persecution, death, enmity, war and later peace.

With the focus around the Oneness of God, the Quran discusses many things throughout various stages of the lifetime of the Prophet PBUH.

The Miracle

Although not granted with clear miracles such those that Jesus, Moses, Suliman, David, Salih and many others mentioned in the Quran had, (Peace be Upon the All) who delivered the same message of One God and were somewhat protected by the miracles that companions could witness increasing them faith and conviction. Prophet Mohammed’s miracle was much subtler.

With the instruction to “Read” as the first words recited from Angel Gabriel (Peace be unto him) to Mohammed PBUH who himself was illiterate at the time. The shock of the revelation and the subsequent messages that were passed on from Angel to Prophet, to companions was encompassed in a style and flow of the language that was unparalleled to any literature or speech.

Poetry

With poetry being the Arabs favorite pastime and preferred method of communication- similar to the way video media is used as the preferred method of communication today. The linguists, tribal chiefs and those in general society marvelled at its depth , wisdom and flow of the recitation. Although some of the flow and rhyme can be lost in translation the depth of its content remains the same.

Many Arabs followed the message immediately upon hearing just a few words, others who were worried about the status quo mainly the tribal chiefs of Mekkah including the Prophets own uncles would cover their ears from hearing recitation and others would claim him as a lunatic, a heretic or a magician.

With the blessings of God upon those who came before us the revelation has been preserved for us as it arrived to read, understand and witness the miraculous nature of its flow and teachings.
